Nyhavn in Copenhagen, May 2012
The canal in the Nyhavn district of Copenhagen, Denmark. The canal and district date from the 1670s. For centuries the waterway handled cargo and freight ships and fishing boats and welcomed sailors, drinkers, prostitutes and artists, among them Hans Christian Anderson, who lived at various addresses on the canal for most of two decades.

Ponte Vecchio, Florence, May 2012
The Ponte Vecchio, spanning the Arno River in Florence, Italy.
This latest of several bridges to cross the Arno here at its narrowest point since Roman times, the Ponte Vecchio dates from 1345. Its design has been attributed to Taddeo Gaddi. It was the only bridge in Florence not destroyed by retreating German forces in WWII.

Galata Bridge over the Golden Horn, Istanbul, March 2012

In the background of the first two images is Galata Tower near the Beyoglu neighborhood of the city. This 14th Century tower was built to help protect the city's Genoese colony. The Ottomans later used it to spot fires.
