Snowdon Theatre facade, Montreal, June 2011

The facade of the Snowdon Theatre in Montreal. Built and opened by United Theatres in 1937, the Streamline Moderne (or late art-deco)-style cinema was designed by Emmanuel Biffa, who also conceived the interior of the Rialto Theatre in Montreal, as well as some 60 cinemas across Canada. After switching to an all x-rated program in 1968, it ran Charlie Chaplin films and nothing else for a full year in 1972. Its life as an active cinema ended in 1982.

A street scene I shot featuring a church in Paris, back in August 1983. I have not been able to trace where exactly this was taken, and what church is shown. Anybody have any ideas?

Late afternoon at Saint Joseph's Oratory in Montreal.

The first small chapel on the site on the west slope of Mount Royal was built by Saint André Bessette in 1904, and a larger church was completed in 1917. The dome of the oratory is the third-largest of its kind in the world, and the church, which attracts over 2 million visitors and pilgrims every year, is the largest in Canada.

Brother André credited the miracles attributed to him to Saint Joseph; most of these miracles had to do with healing of various infirmities, and in the basilica is displayed a massive wall covered in crutches belonging to those who came to be healed. Brother André was beatified in 1982, and canonized in 2010.

Hotel Gellert and thermal baths, Budapest, Hungary, August 2002

The inside pool and the main lobby at the baths of the historic Hotel Gellert in Budapest, Hungary. Located on the right bank of the river Danube, the Art-Nouveau hotel was built between 1916 and 1918, and the adjoining Gellert Baths spa dates from the same period. The earliest references to local waters' healing capacities date back to the 13th Century, and in the Middle Ages a hospital was located on the site.

The complex is renowned for its Art-Nouveau main hall, seen in the second photo, with its gallery and glass roof.

Looking down on a Chelsea street from the High Line in New York, the aerial greenway fashioned out of a section of an old elevated freight railroad (the West Side Line). It runs from just below West 12th Street up to 20th Street; eventually it will stretch through Chelsea to the West Side Yard, near the Javits Convention Center.

Hotel Frances in Guadalajara, November 1999

Looking down on the lobby of the historic Hotel Frances in Guadalajara, Mexico. Our room, unfortunately, was directly above a disco attached to the hotel, so the bed rocked and rolled until 4 am. Attempts to get moved to another room led to animated and ultimately fruitless late-night runnings to and fro, ending in a return to our original room to wait out the noise. A bit surreal...

Built in the year 1610, the hotel boasts of being the oldest in the Americas, and it wears its colonial heart on its sleeve despite several renovations over the years. It's been used as a set for a number of western films, notably by Sergio Leone.

Heading out at low tide to walk around the Rocher Percé on the Gaspé Peninsula, Quebec. For four hours at a time, the tide recedes far enough to make it possible to walk out to and around part of the famed rock formation.

Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, August 1983

 

  

Different views of and from the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, in the summer of 1983. The building in the 4e arrondissement had officially opened only seven years earlier. Designed in the high-tech architecture style by Italian architect Renzo Piano, British architects Richard and Su Rogers and Gianfranco Franchini, it features an exposed skeleton of brightly coloured tubes. Each colour denotes a particular function: green pipes are for plumbing, blue is for climate control, yellow for electrical wiring, and red for circulation elements and safety elements.

The first photo here shown was damaged in an apartment fire, the original negative gone missing. The third photo shows a group of Hare Krishna devotees in the main square in front of the centre.
