In front of the Château de Beynac, one of the many castles - there are more than 1,500 in all - dotting the landscape of Dordogne in France. The area covered by this French département in the country's south-western Aquitaine region corresponds roughly to that of the ancient Périgord county. This castle is one the region's best-preserved and best-known, and overlooks the Dordogne River.

L'Arc de Triomphe in Paris, in the summer of 1983. Located on the Place Charles de Gaulle, at the western end of the Champs-Élysées, it stands in honour of soldiers who died for France in the French Revolutionary and the Napoleonic Wars. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I lies beneath it. The monument was designed in 1806 by Jean Chalgrin.

Built in the Renaissance style with neo-gothic towers,the cathedral in its current incarnation dates from 1854. Damaged in earthquakes in 1932, 1957, 1985, 1995 and 2003, the cathedral is in some danger of partial collapse, its north tower tilting slightly and its dome's structure lightly damaged.
