Fontana di Trevi, Rome, January 2006
The Trevi Fountain (Fontana di Trevi) in Rome. The name is derived from tre vie, or junction of three roads, and the fountain lies at the end point of the Acqua Vergine, a revived ancient aqueduct that supplied Rome with water. This aqueduct brought fresh, clean water some 22 km from a source outside the city. 15th Century town planners had revived the ancient Roman custom of erecting fountains at the endpoints of aqueducts, and the first, modest basin was built here in 1453 on the orders of Pope Nicholas V. A newer, more extravagant fountain was designed by Nicola Salvi in 1730 (though it was only completed in 1762).

Casa Batllo, Barcelona, October 2010
Casa Batllo in Barcelona, Spain. Designed by Antonio Gaudi and Josep Maria Jujol and built in 1877, the building is known by locals as the Casa dels ossos (House of Bones), and is characterized by, among other things, an absence of straight lines. Broken ceramic tiles cover much of the facade, and the roof is arched in such a way as to lead many to surmise it represents the back of a dragon. Carrying that idea further, some have theorized that the turret and cross that rise up next to the arched roof represent Saint George's lance, plunged into the dragon's back.

Coney Island, New York, July 2004
'Shoot the Freak' attraction on Coney Island, New York. The game involves shooting with a paint-ball gun at a live target wearing protective gear, and who darts in and out from behind various props. Coney Island's attraction park has survived recent attempts to have it demolished.
In the background is Nathan's Hot Dogs, where the annual hot dog eating contest is held every summer.
